2D Design and Illustration

The first project within the multi-dimensional design and illustration module was 2D Design and Illustration, which involved creating our own typeface which would later be used to make a zine.

To begin this project we had to take household objects and use them to create letters of the alphabet. I experimented with several different typefaces, using items such as necklaces, keys and makeup brushes. I decided my favourite alphabet was the makeup brush set which I named 'Material Girl'.

Once I'd decided on my alphabet, I uploaded it to 'Calligraphr', a site that allows you to create your own font. I then downloaded my font onto photoshop to create some posters.

In reflection, if I were to create these posters again I think I would have left less negative white space as I think this would have created some more interesting images and shapes. I'm not very comfortable with photoshop yet so I believe once I get more confident I would be able to create some more improved versions of these posters. After creating these posters we then blew them up to A0 size to see how they looked at a big scale.

After creating the posters I experimented with the scanner and used it to zoom in on certain parts of the poster to make some more abstract shapes and images and get rid of a lot of the empty white spaces.

I created these distorted images also using the scanner, by moving the zoomed in poster as it was getting scanned.

The final outcome of the alphabet I created was to turn it into a zine. I tried some different folding techniques with smaller pieces of paper to decide how to fold my zine. I chose a fold that had a similar shape to an arrow as I thought this looked more interesting than a square or rectangle. The final zine was printed double sided at A0 size and folded using my chosen fold.
